Tips for Shower Drain Odor Control
Bad odors emitting from a shower drain can be an unpleasant and unwanted wake up call every morning as you go through your morning routine. In face, shower drain odors are a more widespread problem than you might think.
The cause of these shower drain odors can originate from a variety of sources. Mold in or around your shower can release odors, but often the cause is a buildup of biofilm on the insides of pipes and the bottom side of your drain cover.
Here are three tips on how to eliminate shower drain odors in your bathroom.
Commercial Drain Cleaners
This is often the first solution that comes to mind for ways to get rid of shower drain smells. There are lots of commercial drain cleaners on the market such as Drano, Drain Opener, Liquid Plumber and Mr. Muscle. Some use Alkaline-based chemicals containing sodium hydroxide or potassium. Others are Acidic cleaners that can contain sulfuric acid. Commercial shower odor removers may not be what you want to be pouring down your drains, particularly if you’re concerned about the environment, or if you have small children who may wander into the room where the chemicals have been used.
Manually Clean Out the Biofilm
If you do not want to use a commercial drain cleaner, you can also manually clean out the biofilms that can be causing the odors. To do this, remove the drain cover, use a bottle brush and clean, soapy water to clean all sides of the pipe as far into the drain hole as you can reach. Clean the back of the drain cover and replace. Use an old toothbrush to really give the inside of the pipe and flanges a thorough cleaning. If drain odors still persist, you’ll have to try another solution.
SureSeal Drain Trap Sealer
SureSeal Drain Trap Sealer designed for drain odor control is a physical item that you insert directly into your drain. Water can flow through the Sure Seal device, but odors can’t rise back up through the drain opening. Evaporation of water in the P trap below your drain is often what allows sewage odors to emanate throughout your home. SureSeal prevents that evaporation and continues to allow your shower to function normally.
