Durock Frequently Asked Questions
Whether you’re building a new home and having your USG Durock™ Shower System installed professionally, or you’re the consummate do-it-yourselfer, you’re probably going to have some questions about how to cut and install moisture and mold resistant USG Durock.
Below are answers to the five most common questions about cutting and installing the Durock Shower System, a shower waterproofing system that does not require a mortar bed.
1. Can I apply the USG Durock™ Shower System to ordinary drywall?
No. Your shower walls need to be covered in Durock® Cement Board, Fiberock® Tile Backerboard, or some other building code approved substrate. If you don’t have the proper moisture-proof base for your shower, it will be susceptible to damage by water, mold, or mildew.
2. Can I apply the pre-sloped prefabricated shower base to my existing floor?
Only if your existing floor is absolutely level. If you install the prefabricated, pre-sloped shower base on an uneven floor, your shower may not drain properly. Water may pool on your shower floor, and mold or mildew can result. If your bathroom floor is currently uneven, we suggest installing a sub-floor that is level before you go ahead with your USG Durock™ Shower System installation.
3. Where should my drain pipe come through the floor?
Your floor drain pipe should align with the centre of the floor drain tray. Speak with your plumber to ensure that your floor drain pipe will align correctly with the centre of the floor drain tray.
4. Can I dilute the Durock thinset to save some money?
No. If you modify the Durock thinset mortar, it will not comply with building code approval and could cause your shower installation to leak, incurring property damage and costly repairs.
5. Can I use rubber instead of the USG Durock waterproofing membrane?
No. The Durock Waterproofing Membrane is designed to work in conjunction with the USG Durock™ Shower System. Rubber membranes are notorious for not laying completely flat. This can cause problems when installing the USG Durock™ Shower System.
We’d be happy to answer all your questions and put your mind at ease regarding the installation of your USG Durock™ Shower System.
