Do You Need to Waterproof a Basement Shower?
Here at Dix Systems we have received many calls lately regarding basement showers, and whether or not waterproofing is required when you build a shower in the basement. The short answer is yes! Always!
If you’re considering adding a shower to a basement bathroom, there needs to be some kind of water barrier between the shower stall, the walls that surround the shower stall, and the floor on which the shower will sit.
If the shower drain leaks out of the shower stall at any point the waterproofing barrier will prevent water from leaking into the basement and being wicked up by the walls; or from leaking underneath the walls, and then underneath the flooring material in the rest of the bathroom.
So when it comes to waterproofing and installing a shower drain in the basement floor you have two options:
- PVC Membranes
- Dix’s Oneliner Shower Pans
Avoid PVC Membranes
Often, flexible membranes made of PVC are installed as a barrier. But they bring with them some challenges you might not be aware of. PVC liners often require horizontal pieces of wood behind them to support the PVC. This is an extra step that takes time and costs money.
And, when the PVC liners are created they’re eventually folded to fit into a box for shipping. The folds don’t always flatten completely when unfolded.
Water that may happen to leak under the shower, or around the drain, becomes trapped in these folds and over time begins to build up. The last thing you want is a layer of water sitting on top of the PVC membrane that is beneath your shower. The trapped water will eventually lead to mold and could emit unpleasant, as well as unsafe fumes.
Dix’s OneLiner Shower Pans
We highly recommend using a Dix OneLiner prefab shower pan . This virtually indestructible, polyethylene shower pan system comes with a 25 year warranty and virtually eliminates any chance of leakage. It’s a safer, stronger and more economical choice in the long run, and available in square, rectangle, or neo angle in a variety of sizes.
In fact, the OneLiner isn’t just a shower pan. It’s a complete, structured, all-in-one, waterproof shower pan liner kit designed for easy installation and to provide waterproof protection for the life of your shower. It even allows you to place your drain wherever you need it!
The pre-formed OneLiner shower pan has no folds or seams, comes with 7” high structured walls (so stud backing isn’t required) and is puncture and tear resistant; tough enough to withstand even the toughest construction sites. And unlike PVC membranes, there’s no way for water to pool or become trapped.
