How to Build a Shower Curb with Kirb-Perfect
It is essential to build a shower curb for any open area of your shower perimeter that is not enclosed by solid-wall. Your shower door may be the only open area, in which case your shower curb length will be the same length as your shower door.
However, you may also have an open-wall of your shower, facing the inside of your bathroom. In this case, your shower curb threshold length will be the total length of your shower door, and the rest of the open wall combined.
No matter the design of your shower, it is essential to pay close attention to the construction of your curb or threshold. Many people may forego giving their curb the proper materials and building technique because they assume, incorrectly, that a shower liner is sufficient in preventing water damage. When installing a granite, marble, or stone threshold it is equally important to prepare your shower threshold properly!
Here are the basic steps on how to build a shower curb:
- Wrap your 3-stacked, 2x4 pieces of wood with Bituthene curb seal . This ensures that the wood is protected from any water damage.
- Next, stack the Kirb-Perfect on top of the 2x4 pieces of wood. The Kirb-Perfect is 30” in length and designed to cage the wood.
- Fill up that cage with mortar.
- Once the mortar is dry you are ready to tile over top of the cage, creating a perfectly water-sealed curb threshold.

This PVC Shower Pan Liner acts as waterproofing for over the three-stacked 2×4 wood. When wrapping the PVC liner over your curb there will be 2 small slits at the corners of your curb. This is where you use the Dam Corners and X-15 Bonding Adhesive to waterproof the inside or outside corners of the shower curb.
Once you have a watertight curb you are ready to use Kirb-Perfect on top of that.
